Reported 04.06.24 08:47 from Jim Allman:
.:
.:Some have suggested using insurance to cover the remote-but-serious
.:risks of innovation in GM foods, nanotech, etc. It would impose an
.:up-front cost on investors who might otherwise plunge in without
.:considering those risks, so Bill Joy can get some sleep. What do you
.:think?

I've said it before: cleanrooms and sealed greenhouses. If you're going
to tinker with stuff that has the potential of radically altering the
environment, run your experiments where they won't get out into the wild.
The burden, of course, is on the inventor and her investors, and the fines
for allowing something to escape should be high enough that one mistake
will cost a career, a company, and a fortune. Don't worry, someone else
will buy the IP and retry the experiment, and they'll learn from the first
mistake.
