Idea: if you haven't waxed things yet...

Linux (as really all OS's at the base level) works 'by number'... the
name of a group or user is effectively an alias for it. It is possible
that the settings may not be waxed, but that they are still on the
machine under the user and group numeric reference.

To understand what I mean, try creating a user account, and as that user
make a file, then as root move the new file out of the user account so
you can see it readily (to '/' for example)

Then remove the user account. The ownership listed will show a numeric
reference since the name is gone, but the numeric still exists.

What I am getting at is if you are able to divine the group id number,
you may be able to get back what you lost. I am assuming that you may
have already tried to change it back to what it was, and still no
results.

groupmod -g 510 [groupname here]

whereas before you probably typed this...

groupmod -n [new group name] [old group name]

and probably tried to get it back like this... (the reverse)

groupmod -n [old group name] [new group name]

just for reference, there is a nice site with a decent command list you
can use - it gives you the ability to set up a sample account, though
they really want you to buy their book of course...

o! great Linux gurus!

the idiot-leader needs assistance ... again. ;)

...so I decided I didn't like the group name assigned to my personal
login
on this machine my friend gave me; the user name and group name were the
same (apparantly that's standard under (later) RHL). I changed the
group
name; I don't believe that I changed anything else, just the name of the
group.

Well, when I logged in again, all of the environment settings and
personal
preferences have disappeared. Desktop image gone, toolbar gone,
bookmarks
in Mozilla gone, etc, etc.

How do I fix that? (as in, without having to manually reset everything)

Can I fix that? (as in, suck it up, Alan, you're a Linux idiot and
you'll
have to redo it all by hand)(as in, Matusiak's right and Linux is a pain
in the arse) ;)

...time to invest in a RHL manual. My newbie-ness in trying to navigate
this stuff is tempting me to take this machine to Uzi's grill
tomorrow...

thanks,
Alan
fearless-clueless leader
