Since Alan is not the only Linux n00B on this list, are there any good
books for beginners that stand out from the rest and that you can

Rather than buying a $90 "Linux for n00bs" book, you might consider first buying (or downloading) a good reference on your favorite shell (I guess most Linux machines use bash by default). Also, you might think about devoting some attention to learning an editor like vi or emacs. (Yes, there are awesome GUI editors for Linux, but you'll be glad later for time you spent learning a command-line editor).
I've always been a big fan of O'Reilly. I had the O'Reilly book that covers the LPI Certification, and I thought it made a really good reference. Also check out the 'Linux Hacks' book... good stuff. I haven't seen their 'Learning Linux' books, but you'd be in good hands.
