I try the fish and chips in every pub; for some reason I'm a glutton for punishment, as most of the time you get a tasteless piece of frozen fish deep fried until it falls apart thrown in a basket next to some fries. Maybe that's authentic-- I have no way of knowing, unfortunately.

I worked, some years back, for an Irishman and, on a business trip to Christchurch, New Zealand, he was quite insistent that we all go to this place he knew for lunch where they served "proper" fish 'n chips -- the kind you just can't get in the States. The place was within walking distance of our meeting so we all hiked over there. When we arrived we found them serving limp, greasy, semi-transparent overcooked fish with equally dodgy-looking fries. We were all rather embarrassed for our Irish friend who had recommended the place but when we had carried our trays to our table, he lit into the sodden mass with obvious pleasure, saying "AAHHHH, now *that's* the stuff!!!"
