A workaround could be to change your registration (I expect that's "easy" and then you could change it back after the election. I'm a registered "Independent" myself, so I've got the same "challenge."

You've got the wrong character, Ed. I'm a yellow-dog Democrat!

When I turned 18 I duly registered myself to vote, but Mom's a Democrat and Dad's a Republican so I indicated no party affiliation. The next election I went to the polls and was turned away because it was a primary. Republican candidates were scary way back then (some of you may not remember Ronald Reagan or Richard Nixon), so from that point on I've been a Democrat, and happy to remain so.
