And its not really SMS if you have to be connected via some Web interface to a remote computer in order to enter the message. That's old telco circuit-mentality, when SMS is packet tech.
Is there an infrastructure issue here? I wonder if the Telco's in the U.S. are trying to keep using copper, while in Europe it's easier to deploy
packet tech.

Because U.S. telcos are greedy and stupid. They are just looking for services they can charge extra for. There are also problems of interoperability between different wireless providers.
