i personally don't know what to think of the flash mob hysteria, perhaps because i have failed to visualize or otherwise see a good use for them. or really what their purpose is. or why this is news.

but that still doesn't stop me from wondering when Ashcroft and his Military will deal with these peace-loving hippies like China did with the Falun Dafa movement.

Some of y'all might be interested in the Flashmob thing. Call it fad or phenomenon, it's been the hit of the slow news Silly Season this year. Now it is coming to the Triangle.

A coy figure known only as Mob Man is organizing a Flashmob in the Triangle. He's been doing this mainly on Friendster.com, with some success. To get on the list, you need to join Friendster.com and make Mob Man your "friend".

I'll tell you right now, I'm not Mob Man, and I really wish I knew who he is. I won't even be in town on August 23, the date set for the local Flashmob, so I can't even look around and try to guess. I've been emailing him and he said it was OK to spread that link around, so there you have it.

I have been tracking the Flashmob meme as it spreads, mainly by blogging stories on Howard Rheingold's /Smart Mobs/ book blog.

It's been fascinating to watch the meme spread since June 16. Here are a few more points of reference for the uninitiated.
