You could scan the negatives instead, ifthey're still in strips it would
at least expedite the process.
IMO what photo places charge for scanning and burning to CD is so
exorbitant that if it's your only route you might as well buy a scanner
with a transparency attachment and scan them yourself.
My father recently completed scans of 46 slide carousels full of slides
from his father's collection. Now he's working on my great-uncle's
collection. Once you get into scanning it seems you can't stop! :)
