cheap is relative but the price/performance ratio has been radically improving. battery life and size are likely to be trade-offs. about 30% of the volume of the little guys seems to be battery. most of them come with small memory cards, you'll probably want to get a bigger one. the good news is that the 2MP models don't fill them up so quickly.

i've really liked my canon s45. it stakes out a pretty good middle ground between capable and pocket size. the little Elph's are nice. you might take a look at the s200. they've just added 3MP and 4MP models, so the 200 ought to be dropping in price.
