I am putting together a "Linux 101" class in Raleigh on Saturday, Jan 18,
from
9:00 am until 6:00 pm. This class is intended for people who are moderately
computer knowledgable (with Windows most likely) but haven't been formally
introduced to Linux and would like to learn how to use it in a fun, friendly
atmosphere. Topics will include:

-Reasons to use Linux
-Brief overview of background and history
-Linux vocabulary and jargon
-Key fundamental concepts
-Getting started
-Surfing the web
-Using email
-Creating documents
-Playing games
-Installing new software
-Getting help

I will provide all of the necessary hardware (the class will be taught using
a
Red Hat 8.0 server with LTSP and thin clients). The class will be very hands
on, and participants are encouraged to experiment with the workstations as
much as possible throughout the day. Each participant will receive a printed
copy of the course material and installation CDs for Red Hat 8.0 for their
own personal use. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Due to time constraints hardware setup and installation will not be part of
the class. However, I will make special arrangements for individuals who
would like personal assistance setting up Linux on their own PC (something
like a mini-installfest).

The cost of the class is $99 for people who sign up before Jan 4, $149 after
Jan 4. Payment by check or cash is required by Jan 11, and a 25%
cancellation fee will apply. If you know someone who might be interested in
attending, please feel free to forward this opportunity to them.

If you have any questions, please contact Jason Tower at 624-0896 or
jason AT cerient.net. Thanks everyone!

Jason
