We use mailman, which is configured to append a link at the bottom of each
email to a management page for that particular list. I don't think it
supports putting a summary on the top of each email with a description of
each list they may have subscribed to, but I can see where it would be useful.

What we have instead are separate mailing lists for each topic, each of which
is described on the page when they filled out a form to subscribe, and in the
subsequent confirmation email.
