hey everybody!
good to see the list is active again, its been a while.
a lot has happened in my life since my last post on this list.
I have meet a woman and we now have a son that's close to a year and a half.
we have moved across the country to an area where we can both find jobs.
we just bought an house from the forties so i guess that it will keep me
occupied most of the time, (not much has been done since it was built)
there is a small cluster of houses where ours is but town development never
went the way they planned and it is still a somewhat rural area,
hopefully we can grow some vegetables in the garden and maybe have some
chickens.
I hope to find the time between house renovating and family to get my woodgas
powered international truck roadworthy, which would be really satisfying
since I have been at it for almost ten years.
it would be nice to hear what everyone else has been up to
kind regards Anders

I'd like to participate and can promise to try to avoid the politics. It's
harder to do that now than before since everything has become intertwined.
It's hard to simply say "It sure is hot today" without triggering someone.
Never thought it would happen, but my daughter beat me to having chickens.
She's grown and married and has her own place, and her and her husband have
built quite a setup for chickens. She's been over run with eggs for several
months now and delivers to a few local places. So that's a little homestead
topic.

I made a blog post today that's homesteady. Made a very short little video
clip of how we got the chainsaw out of the tree when it got stuck, lol. I
wouldn't say it's a procedural of any sort though- way too short and doesn't
show the whole story. Just caught the part about how we kept the saw from
hitting the ground by tying it off when Rob pulled on the tree with the
tractor.
I'm not sure if we were living here in the Ozarks when I joined this list or
not, it's been so long ago that I joined. But other things have changed, too.
I've divorced and remarried and this new husband is all on-board with the
homesteading thing. I've been learning a lot of practical skills, like
learning to drive the tractor and use it for various things, too. The blog
post has lots of nature pics from that morning's feed rounds, too. Mostly
what I write about at the blog is nature, homesteading, and ginseng.
Gene, are you still putting out books or writing articles?

I finished my yearly four trees a couple of weeks ago. During the
process I managed to get the chainsaw caught a couple of times but with
the tractor right there is was more of an inconvenience than anything else.
My process is o drop the trees in the woods, cut them to length, then
load them on the trailer for the trip out of the woods. Down by the shop
I buck the logs while on the trailer, roll them off, then split with the
spliter, throw the firewood in the little pickup, then stack it in the
woodshed. Ready for winter.
I have been taking leaners from along the creek but this year I am
taking stuff out of the woods. Last year I cut a trail from the place
next door up to the top of the hill. That made it easy to get logs out.

Don we haven't gotten any of our firewood ready yet this year and I know
we're going to regret that later. Year before last we were caught the same
way and had to cut during 10 degree days. But we've been so busy with too
many other things again this year. Last year in June a flash flood caused a
landslide here that took out the driveway. At the time my husband was
working overseas so the neighbor with a big dozer opened a new, very rough,
cut on the side so I could at least get to the house in 4wd. Rob came home
in March of this year and he's been working on opening the old driveway back
up and also on the pad for a shop he wants to build. This tree we cut was a
giant cedar tree in the way. He felled it in the woods too, and we're
cutting it in 6-8' sections so we can haul it to the sawmill to have boards
made of it. It's all the limbs that I hate so much on cedars, though.
What is "bucking the logs"? I've heard the expression, but haven't a clue
what it means, lol.
Gene, well, it's good that you're having fun no matter what it is that
you're doing!

I am hoping it will be dry by early November. I checked it the other
day and most of it is at 20% M.C. Should be OK when needed.

That is a good time to be in the woods, no bugs. Maybe this year.

The second year we were here a flood washed a huge hole by the concrete
crossing. Usinf my tractor and a borrowed tractor we filled it with as
many big rocks we we could find then progressively smaller rocks until
it was full. So far no more wash out.

I had a big Pine by the driveway that made a mess of anything under. I
had it taken down and took one 12' log over to Gene's where we cut out
four 12" wide boards. They will be ready to use this winter.
I am headed to another mill this week to get some rough Pine boards. My
son bought a house in Connecticut that was built in 1915 and remained in
the same family since. He needs to replace some door frames that are
7/8 thick. I will plane them then take them back to him in a couple of
weeks..

Cutting them into sections for firewood. That is what a Buck Saw is
used for. I cut mine to 16"-18", not with a buck saw but a chain saw.
I also split with a hydraulic splitter. This place is so well insulated
that I can only feed one piece at a time into the stove. Otherwise it
drives you out. We have to open upstairs windows most of the time.

We paid a professional to fell a bunch of trees last Spring to make space
for a shop addition. There were several high risk trees and the rest too
close to my existing shop to risk it. They cut them to length but did not
buck them. I almost wish I'd paid them to do so, as it's been either too
hot or too wet or both for me to fight with them. I bucked and split a few
trees so we are good on our initial firewood needs but I have a winter of
bucking and splitting ahead of me. It's been a mild summer by our standards
(Upstate SC) but I feel the advances of age, even though I have more
equipment at my disposal than ever before.
