All my contacts come to me by word of mouth, I don't spend much on advertising myself other than business cards and a rate card, but I do attend industry events. My portfolio is digital. Since magazines have gone direct to print, I upload everything using FTP on my DSL. Organizations see my clients ads in print and get my contact information directly from the magazines or other clients. Because I often sell as many ads as the magazine's own reps and my work is right and on time they like to suggest me to new advertisers.
Because I offer measurement and analysis reporting on the advertising campaigns I plan as well as media buying, I am more than either graphic artist or ad agency to my clients. I am able to help my clients--all non-profits--show their boards that advertising dollars work in a targeted campaign, and this helps keep them funded with tax dollars. I do good work, backed up by results. It's a win/win/win situation.
Sounds like you have all kinds of skills to market yourself as a consultant. Remember, you can control to an extent how much work you take on. I'm sure there's something out there for you too, if you explore the possibilities.

Sage; How do you find these contacts? What sort of 'projects' can you do entirely from home? My interest and specialty is in research, but with internet search engines anyone can do them. I used to do free lance software reviews and industry interviews, but that was almost 20 years ago and I've lost all my contacts and haven't kept up with the field.
My undergraduate degree and my other Masters (yeah..I have 2 Master's degrees...over educated and unemployable) are in Anthropology. Talk about useless degrees; you need a Doctorate to do anything in the field. Ah, youth! I was going to be a famous archeologist, until I noticed that the PhD candidates were still working for the same minimum wage that I was getting on digs. And the PhD in charge of the digs worked as a waitress on weekends...not a good sign.

Lynn,
I also did my graduate study in Library and Information Science a long
time ago. I think the key here in finding work today is to push the
information science part and downplay the library part. Forget the local
library politics--those jobs don't pay that well usually. I could have
had the full time library director job here for minimum wage--no way!
Brush up on your database and records management, Internet research,
etc. and print up some cards as an independent consultant. Target
industries that interest you (what was your undergraduate in? That's a
good place to start), learning all you can about them in advance. Hire
out on a project by project basis. You will earn more and have time to
homestead too, working from home if you have all the hardware and
software. This is what I've done, carved a niche.
My educational path: Environmental Design/Botany>Art>Library and
Information Science
My career path: Graphic Designer>Advertising Director>Botanical Garden
Information Specialist>Nature Festival Organizer>Tourism
Director>Independent Ad Agency and Tourism Consultant for the Nature
Tourism Industry.
Good luck!
