Spring fever hits really hard in the frozen north. We won't get to our 'frost-free' date until the end of May. We've had some beautiful days, and I could get out and get the beds ready, but can't plant much out yet.We just went 5 or 6 days without going below 32 degrees...unusual for this early in the spring, but now winter is back. My garlic (planted last fall) it up 3-4 inches. I've got nice tomato plants, peppers and eggplants started in the greenhouse; I'll put a few out in early May under plastic. I also have several flats of onions and leeks. The onions can go out before the last frost, but it's still going down into the lower 20's some nights, and I don't want to risk freezing my little onion babies. They are growing well in the flats in the greenhouse.

I've also started a lot of celery, cabbage, kale, etc. The brassicas can go out soon, after this cold spell, and probably the potatoes, too. This week I'm starting a lot of the companion flowers...bee balm, marigolds, borage, etc. I always start a couple of flats of early bush beans (Contender) in April, then transplant in mid-May and hope for no frost...I often have beans by ealry June. Early May I'll start the squash and melons to transplant in early June, when it is truly warm.

Everyone seems to have spring fever............

I'm also itching for it to warm up a bit more. Although some things planted are showing their faces now.

Potatoes are really pretty plants so far - really green ! I have never seen them before. They range from 1/2" high to 5" high. I've no idea why they all growing diffferently since most were planted the same day.

Pole beans are just starting to unfold under the straw. Pinto beans are about 4" high and if no frosts should do well.

Thanks people for the info on the garbanzo's.... I bought some to plant, and make sure I get them in the ground tomorrow if they are that slow of a grower!

(Just had to break the silence after learning that it is going down to
27(which means 24 or so for me) Sunday night and then 31 (28) on Monday
night. I am so frustrated!!!! Why can't Spring come and STAY?
And of course, it is raining AGAIN.
And there is a 50% chance of rain on both Sunday and Monday, AGAIN
My garden is flooded under an inch of water STILL because new springs
keep popping up-thank God for raised beds, but I want to plant corn and
beans! My peas are under water, and since they can't swim, I'm
assuming
they have drowned...they look a bit pea-ked<g>.
The creek ran from Wednesday to Sunday, the longest time ever,
disappeared on Tuesday afternoon, started up yesterday afternoon and it
running full bore right now. I'm starting to get used to the creek
running.
