All the rez's got about the same "commodities" foods. Generally barrels of flour that couldn't be sold elsewhere, rancid beef, and so forth and so on.

Every group has their own personal spin on how to make fry bread. You get down closer to Mexico and lots of folks use those little bitty rolling pins. What they put on the fry bread at home and what you get on the Red Road (PowWow Trail) and in restaurants aren't necessarily one and the same thing.

I remember as a kid loving to travel up to the rez in the summer because the aunties would make them sweet and then bury them under smashed fresh berries. You could always tell the happy kids, they had purple smiles <g>

The typical indians were trading with others, then the white man came in and screwed the indians over type story. Rounded them up into crowded camps. The ingredients for food they gave the indians were rancid at times, which is the horrible part - that they provided them rancid food. They did they best the could with the supplies. Fry bread was one thing to come out of it. Can't remember if it was in Arizona, New Mexico or Colorado.

Lynda,

Does this recipe sound about right?

1 cup unbleached flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon powdered milk
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup water
Vegetable oil for frying

I had Navajo Fry Bread in Arizona years ago, of course as a Navajo Taco. I
pretty sure we were in a resturant on a reservation. I remember that it was
good, but had completely forgotten about it until you recently mentioned it.....
I also learned since that the story behind its original creation was horrible.
