yesterday I visited with an older man (67) who built himself an "earthship"
(more on that later)....
His place is approximate 2 miles from a paved road. I was asking him why he
had so many big dogs (all are 1/2 wolf bred). For protection.
As he showed me the earthship (awesome) ... I noted loaded guns propped up
next to every door. I asked him why. Protection.
Why? He told me that illegals walking thru the area, walk along the ridge he
is on, so they can see if "La Migra" is on the road 2 miles away. The
illegals frequently attempt to break in and steal things - anything from food
and water, to clothes, etc.
Some of these are "drug mules" and other just illegals passing thru.
His property is about 20 miles or so north of where I am (and some 40? miles
north of the Mexican border) . These illegals pass my area before they get
to him. This property has a 6' high chain link around it with triple strands
of barb across the top.... and even so, the illegals have come on the
property. My first guess would be looking for water and food... this IS the
desert. A quick gunshot on the air sends them scrambling.
People buying guns today are buying them for protection --- IMO.

Somehow, the thought of more people with more guns doesn't give me a warm
fuzzy feeling. I'm just an old 'peace and love' hippy.

Thank you for the permission to make fun of Algore. While I don't feel it was
necessary, I appreciate it, and will continue to do so. The reason I
mentioned it is that we are having record cold and snowfalls in this area. Of
course, it's just a precursor to the new Ice age that global warming is
causing. Just watch The Day After, and you will see...
For the record, I have no doubt that climate change is occurring. It always
does. There is a huge history of it in the fossil record. I don't buy the
argument that WE are causing it, especially when you weight the argument that
a single Mount Pinatubo(?) eruption puts more particulates and gases into the
air than mankind has in his ENTIRE HISTORY. I also find it most interesting
that Mars seems to be experiencing global warming, as is Venus. My SUV
undoubtedly causes that, too.
Now, does this mean I oppose arguments that we need to husband resources more
carefully?? No. But don't force things on me because of fear and panic of
mindless drones who fear the sky is falling.

It's winter, and we have cold weather. Make sport of Mr Gore as much
as you want, but even 20 years ago when we had winter it got cold and
stayed that way most of the winter. Ice storms were rare. Now our
temps fluctuate between subzero and the 50s. Atleast we are still
getting enough cold weather to kill most pasture worms and othrer
pests. And the local utility has a deal on propane-fueled generators
rto alleviate the week-long power outages that are now business as
usual.
