Yes. I used to use that same method to get my cervical vertebrae back into alignment--when I was getting myself off the thrice-a-week chiropractor treatments--due to back and neck damage. My method uses a wrapped wine bottle.
I also have a turned wood thingie that has high and low areas so it fits alongside the spine and pushes against those muscles. One puts in under the back and moves from time to time to reposition the device. It is as deep massage. Hurts like hell until you get used to it.
