Remember that Zimbabwe was formerly Rhodesia named after Cecil Rhodes who
just about owned the whole colony at one time. It has been a troubled place
forever and when it declared its independence from Britain (in 1965 if memory
serves) it did so without British blessing because it would NOT agree to
majority rule.
The "redistribution" of land was always simmering under the surface and might
not have been a bad thing if they'd done it as Mexico did after la
Revolucion. And remember that Mugabe had been in office quite some time
before the land
was seized. I can't imagine what was on people's minds .... did they think
he really wouldn't do it?
