Sage, check out the links I sent under the subject "Egg color"

Brown tinted chalk? I'm almost scared to wonder how that would work!

I recently read where they are now feeding chickens brown tinted chalk and that makes a white egg chicken lay brown eggs. This was due to the fact people believe the brown ones are more wholesome and better for you. The quality of the egg should have nothing to do with the egg's color, but how the hen is raised and what she feeds on. Because the standard factory bred hen lays white eggs, people just assume the other colors are not from factories.--Sage

I just bought some brown eggs at the grocery, this week. I have never seen them in the market , before. They were considerably cheaper than the regular white eggs? I use to buy from a local man with backyard chickens. he had brown, blue & white eggs. His eggs were smaller than market eggs, but they free ranged in his yard and garden and were supplemented with organic chicken food. I lost touch with him. I can't have chickens. My dog kills even slow pigeons.

The breed of the chicken does determine the color of the
egg, but it starts out white and is colored along its path
out of the bird. What is interesting is you can generally
tell what color egg a breed will lay by the color of their
ear patch, if you don't know your breeds, or have mixed
breed chickens. Our Ameraucanas lay in an assortment of blue
green, from robins egg blue to army green, the Polish lay
white eggs that are very pointy, and the Brahmas lay brown,
the Faverole tan, etc.

No; I didn't know that, either. I suppose the
ethos of chickens would therefore be centered upon
pre-determination, rather than free will. I'm still
curious to what sage said about what causes chicken eggs to
color. I assumed it was the breed of the chicken. I guess
I was wrong......bobford

'I'll be'. Yours looks like it
could
easily be 1/4 ib. also. Your blog pic said that
all eggs
start out white and change colors being delivered.
How does
that explain "blue" or "brown"
eggs. What causes the color?
Egg talk is fun. Did you know that the nucleus of
every egg
a hen will ever lay is within her when she emerges
from the
shell?
