The color of the egg does vary by breed, and by individual hen. I can sometimes tell which hen laid which egg by the color. I have one that consistently lays dark brown eggs, and one little one who lays pinkish eggs. And a duck who lays green eggs, and a peahen who lays pretty blue eggs. The color goes all the through (but a little lighter on the inside), so it must be determined early in the egg formation.

No; I didn't know that, either. I suppose the ethos of chickens would therefore be centered upon pre-determination, rather than free will. I'm still curious to what sage said about what causes chicken eggs to color. I assumed it was the breed of the chicken. I guess I was wrong......bobford

easily be 1/4 ib. also. Your blog pic said that all eggs
start out white and change colors being delivered. How does
that explain "blue" or "brown" eggs.
What causes the color?

Egg talk is fun. Did you know that the nucleus of every egg
a hen will ever lay is within her when she emerges from the
shell?
