Poke salad, salat, pokeweed...very common in the South. It grows quickly and large..fruit will dye things purple as you are aware.
James will probably chime in with all kinds of details, but quickly, you use the young leaves for salad. Older leaves can be eaten too if boiled with a change of water. I would not eat the berries. It is what makes bird poo purple..why would I do that to myself? LOL

I found out what my mystery berries are from a brother visiting from Tennessee, polkberries. I had searched online and through my books for hours without finding it. He told a story about how an elderly lady he knows uses the berries to help her arthritis. Five berries a day, freezing them for later. Further research warned they are poisonous. Anyone eat the greens? My shrub is huge, about ten feet in diameter with bushels of fruit. I also found they were used as ink and our consitution was written with it. Anyone have a recipe?
