Hello everyone:)

This is Frank. Nice to hear your comments.

Unfortunately, I now get so many emails, and have so much to do that I mostly
just scan, or delete the Digests now.

I must get 200+ emails a day, or so it seems:)

I hope that in these difficult all are OK. But I must say that given our
homesteading outlook we are far more independent, and frugal that we are
hopefully in better shape than most.

After all if you spending is modest , you can stretch your income. Food, and
gas prices hurt.

I've cut way down on trips to town:)

Just as a follow up to my email of 1999. many of the trees I actually planted
didn't make it due to extreme weather conditions -especially drought, and
flash floods.Plus some idiot, who was trespassing ran right over many of the
just starting seedlings,which never recovered.

I now have a good number of producing walnut trees but you only get $12 a
hundred weight for de-hulled walnuts. Lots of work for little return.

I have a few persimmons, but hardly get to the "sweet" fruit since it's a
favorite of so much wildlife:)

Best to all. Frank

It could be okay, maybe, until your digital credit (money) is linked to your
palm print (easier & safer than carrying a wallet); your palm print is used
for
a new smart gun, which is inoperable without the print, and records every
usage
with the print; and until doors will not open for you (literally and
figuratively), without the scan. It is always the unintended
consequences.............bobford

Thanks for mentioning that. I never thought to do that and hate to see
trees damaged when I nail to them, which I do a lot.

The Chinese banned guns in China 40 years ago for fear of political dissent,
using children breaking a window in a gov't building as excuse. This is from
tomorrow's paper. On the left there is a place to click for a video . It
is
an interesting story .......................

I remember that post as well. I thought he was nuts to plant so many trees,
now I'm surrounded by a forest on 36 acres and completely understand. Darn
AEP cut down our lone persimmon in the go-around before last when they were
clearing trees by power lines (it wasn't very close, but they leveled it
anyway). I was not home and was furious when I came home from work to find
it gone. The previous owner planted that tree and we were learning what to
do and how to eat persimmons.

My goodness but almost 10 years went by fast. Let's try to make the next 10
slow down a bit. Maybe if we collectively try ... ?

" In preparation for Halloween, I was looking for a project that I can do

Definitely, somebody has done this already so I?ld better check trusty old

I found 2 DIY solar powered jack-o-lantern projects in instructables.

Sage, I don't know if this is one of the people you know, Texas is big, so
probably a lot of strawbale builders. I found this on Treehugger.com

This strawbale builder is Nick Moser

I remember being envious...that was only a few months after we bought
this place.
I have a recipe for persimmon hickory nut bread somewhere. It is
probably online, too, if anyone wants to search it. Like all the other
fruits this year, the persimmons were weighted down, too. My driveway is
covered with them and hickory nuts...makes me hungry just to walk the
driveway. I found a 'new' persimmon this week, too, so that is 5
mature, fruiting persimmons within 150 feet of the house. Not too bad.
Do you want me to collect some seeds and send them to you?

When I was a kid, we used to play 'fort', but it wasn't really a fort.
We had some logs we moved around and basically made a footprint of a
cabin/house. I recall that while playing 'homesteader'(It is what we
did, but not what we called it-I did not know that word then) we would
open persimmon seeds to look at the 'silverware' within. There is even
some folklore-I think the knife means icy winter, the spoon means snowy
winter, and the fork means mild winter. I will have to look at one
tomorrow.

I know Frank is still around...he may get the digest or something, but
I'd wager he is still here.
