Bill, you have a great understanding of Socialism..  There are many reasons
that it doesn't work, but as you have concluded, the fact remains it doesn't.
And, it will always, as it's on function, eventually lead to ceratin levels
of oppression and tyranny.

In very homogeneous societies, in ,you can institute socialistic programs
that will work until the population begins to decline or populations of
immigrants increase.  But, even , at it's best, what does it get you.  Real
quick, without using Google, other than pocketknives, and watches; what do
the Swiss produce?

France is starting to unravel, as is a lot of Europe, because of the two
conditions I mentioned above.  We have evolutionary requirements that we must
try to obtain and protect territory.  Fighting nature only relieves some of
our more base urges. The primitive inside is our maker.

Hell, if socialism did work, I'd go to the sword store today; buy two, and
beat both of them into plowshares ........bobford

I usually don't write in, but just read what others write.  I will, however,
put forth my ideas about socialism.  I think that people do better under
socialism because you usually don't have a few people with most of the money
or whatever and the rest of the people with very little as is the case with
this country.  That being said, I also think that people loose something if
they don't have the opportunity to rise above their fellows.  So, I thnk
socialism is a better system, but I also don't think it will work.

'socialism, or any other planned economy, always leads to
totalitarianism' t his is a paraphrase of a Hayek quotation

“The Road to Serfdom” by Friedrich von Hayek

.........................................................................................................................................................................

"....history had repeatedly confirmed: The effort to transform natural
inequalities into social equality could only lead to greater, more brutal
inequality; the socialist effort to transform individual diversity into social
unity could only lead to the totalitarian state.

Deutscher was wrong. There would never be a socialist political democracy
erected on a socialist economic base. Socialism was an impossible -- and
therefore destructive -- dream. "

Bob,
It seems that a lot of the things you are talking about point to a trend
toward
totalitarianism,  not necissarily socialism.
