The price of "grass fed, all natural" beef is twice that of grocery store meat. My cousin's neighbor did the same thing as the folks you know. My cousin's in-laws went with the "grass fed, all natural" beef, pumped up their ads with the info on the Omega whatevers that grass fed has more of than feed lot cattle and they've sold every single steer right off the land instead of having to use a middle man. They now make *much* bigger profits!

They are now looking for some lease land to run the steers on so they can run more cow/calves on the home property.

And the world will be the better for it.

The best use of land in the Ozarks besides growing trees is permanent
pasture. The mild winters mean that very little hay is needed.

The issue today is the cost of grain. Cattle are typically raised on
grass, supplemented, and finished on grain. Grain prices are driving
some cattle people out of business. I know personally one family that
is selling their thousand acres of mostly permanent pasture because of
grain prices.

Homesteaders who raise animals may wish to consider growing their own
grains.
