The best use of land in the Ozarks besides growing trees is permanent pasture. The mild winters mean that very little hay is needed.

The issue today is the cost of grain. Cattle are typically raised on grass, supplemented, and finished on grain. Grain prices are driving some cattle people out of business. I know personally one family that is selling their thousand acres of mostly permanent pasture because of grain prices.

Homesteaders who raise animals may wish to consider growing their own grains.
