I thought I'd give you guys an update. Thanks for your input.

After turning over the last raised bed (and taking apart two of
them--removing the wood edges), we planted 24 broccoli plants and put
compost in each hole and also applied it on top. The compost originally
contained egg shells so hope the calcium content of the compost is
sufficient. Used black plastic pipe (4" diameter) around each plant as a
collar, had forgot we had two stacks in the corner of the garden--it's been
that long since I've gardened.

We planted yellow onion between the rows and between the broccoli plants.

As for potatoes, what we've done would have made you all snicker I'm sure.
My husband bought 50# of Kennebec seed potatoes. No kidding. When he came
into the house carrying the bag I about fell over. This for people who have
never planted potatoes before. He had no idea you could cut them up. Now he
does. I cut up potatoes yesterday, making a small dent in the bag after
having already given away at least 10# of seed potatoes. Still more to give
away.

We dug two trenches and planted approximately 30' of potatoes. That seemed
like plenty of potatoes for us, especially for our first potato year. We put
compost in each trench, pulled the dirt back on top and put more compost on
top. Have to pick up some straw yet.

Lisa
