On other fora I engage in the 'Peak Oil' discussions. I am a persuaded
peakist, that is, I could be persuaded otherwise if there were enough
evidence.
It's not an idle armchair speculative subject. If the phenomenon is real, it
will radically change our way of life (which, as I would opine, it is
currently
doing).

So I run into news factoids like this: http://tinyurl.com/6hfhlk

There has been a giant oil deposit discovered off the coast of Brazil and so
Peak Oil has been debunked, there will be plenty, plenty for decades to come.

See, we are STILL finding h-u-g-e oil reserves. I even heard this newsinoid
mentioned on Paul Harvey with a resounding, Carl Sagan-like, b'billions of
barrels of oil.

Digging a little deeper one finds this: http://tinyurl.com/5rzfdz

There IS no huge oil find. And moreover, if there WERE a huge find, if the
oil deposit turned out to be as large as has been fantasized and we had
access
to it immediately and all to ourselves, that is, if the Brazilians said,
"Here
you go, USA, you are such nice guys, take it all, nao e problema!" ... how
long would it last us? Fifty years! Twenty years! Surely ten years. No.

33 billion barrels of oil would meet our current rate of consumption for
scarcely three years.

IF it existed, which is very much in question.

Yet .... yet the story takes on a life of its own and gets frequently quoted
.... "Say, didn't you know, they've discovered such a big oil field off the
coast of Brazil that we will have plentious oil for decades and decades.

So no one addresses the problem that is heading our way, nor any of the real
problems heading our way.
