No black-and-white answer for tools. The cliche answer is buy the
best you can afford.

What is your tool philosophy? Cheapest possible? Want your great-
grandkids to be able to use them? Any issues with foreign or
domestic? New or used preferred? Auctions nearby? Is the tool budget
constrained? If so, to what extent?

Occasionally I buy cheap, but not often. More likely, I buy as much
quality as the cash I have in my pocket at time of purchase. For a
major tool I wait until I have the cash. I find top-quality tools a
pure pleasure to use. I have a Smith & Hawken four-tined fork
destined to lift potatoes and minimally disturb earthworms. Stainless
steel tines and shaft; perfect wood D-handle. It is beautiful. It is
so pretty that it sits in the living room of this nice city house,
waiting to go to Heartwood. It waits because I won't take it there
until security against theft is assured. This fork will do its jobs
and give me pleasure for the rest of my years. I could have bought
one for one-sixth as much.

I have made mistakes. About ten years ago I bought a strong garden
rake with a fiberglass handle guaranteed for life. I now have to wear
gloves to use it because the sun has caused fibers to stick out and
they poke my skin.

Choosing expensive tools is somewhat like choosing a wife. Make sure
you know what you really, really want, and why, before you make the
acquisition.

Tool talk is unlimited. As are responses to Freud's essential
question about women.
