I know where that is along the old Route 66. I lived in the towns of Mojave and Lancaster, well west of you, for many years.
Among the things I've been unpacking, shuffling and
re-shuffling, etc. in my perhaps-efforts-in-vain to get
organized, is a bunch of correspondence from-to Daniel
Peaches (Navajo) - then Representative, AZ. He and I
were having an ongoing discussion regarding the merits
of removing Navajo children from the reservation and
placing them in Mormon-run off-reservation boarding
schools.
What the Mormons attempted to do was almost as bad as the Catholics but they did it in more modern times with the full assistance of the BIA. The intent was to brainwash native children both into the Mormon mythology and western thought. More cultural destruction by another religion. I agree with Richard Dawkins that teaching children religion should be considered child abuse.
