I post this to again remind us that a great deal of what we read and
tend to believe is "news" that is manufactured and manipulated by some entity other than the ostensible author. Never forget, let the
reader beware.
Have you noticed that a lot of "news" is recycled or actually old stuff
being re-reported?
Take that iceshelf collapse in the Artic. That happened months ago, but
is just now being reported in the mainstream. Yesterday I read an
article about how much larger the Andromeda galaxy really is than
previously thought. It said something to the effect of "it would take
up a considerable portion of the night sky". I'm telling you, this is
OLD news. I learned that little factoid in college.
Last night, on the news, there was a story (top story at 5) about an
escapee in my county (friends in Atlanta called me to tell me to turn on
the TV cuz they know I don't watch in the daytime and they were
worried). At first, the story sounded scary and urgent, but after
listening for a few minutes, it turns out the guy escaped in DECEMBER
and has been on the lam for almost a month! I don't recall hearing
about this dangerous dude when he escaped last month...and in this small
town, I would have thought I would have.
I often wonder about the timing of stories. I think much of the timing
is set to someone's agenda...Haven't heard too much about bird flu
lately have you, and we are in the middle of flu season...no, they gear
those flu stories up in the fall so that people will be scared enough to
run to their docs. No big fund raisers for the Dafur crisis, so that
story has disappeared....I find it interesting to see what's NOT being
reported almost as much as what is....
The story you quoted reminds me again of how big business and the media
shape our thinking, from tobacco, to oil, to parasites, to health
consciousness, to drugs, etc. ad nauseum. Thanks..
