There's a lot of negatives that got rehashed in this thread. I for one am pleased that Columbus had the courage to seek out a new route,
and hence gave birth to a nation that provided a refuge from tyranny. Sorry, I guess I'm getting old and I'm weary of hearing the
politicized "trash America" rhetoric. Think I'll go out to the barn
and have a intelligent discussion with my animals:) Homesteader

"A government that has the ability to give you every thing you need has the power to take every thing you have." Gerald Ford

Hello Richard. I love that Ford quote..you know we will probably lose
him before the year is out. :( I always liked the klutz, reminded me
of me.<g>
I feel much the same as you, and I appreciate you giving me a succinct
way to express my feelings. While this country is not perfect, it seems
that all you hear today are people running down the country. It's a
virtual bash fest and you can even find it in history textbooks. I
think in the last few decades people have been trying to acknowledge and
make amends for past mistakes, but it has simply gone way overboard to
the point to where is seems now to be politically correct and almost
expected to hate Western ideals and actions. All I am saying, like you,
I think, is that we really should try to balance things a bit. Like
you say, this country has been a refuge for those who were starving or
persecuted elsewhere, and yet, in the same vein, the presence of those
refugees has also created an atmosphere of persecution for those who
were native to this land.
Anytime there is movement from one place to another, there is change.
We tend to believe change is good, but we also know that change can be
detrimental. Touting only the detriment and not looking for the benefit
is a dangerous mentality, and that applies not only to Columbus, but to
simple things like bird migration and the evolution of species and
habitats in the natural world. One thing usually does replace another.
A blight from Asia kills all the American Chestnuts and that gap in the
ecosystem is replaced my maples and oaks. It has both a positive and
negative effect, and we have to see both.
Thanks Richard, for reminding us of that!
