Here in the north country my sunflowers grow to an aweome size without any
halp from me. Mind you years of adding compost do encourage growth!
Possibly it's the days are just that much longer here than further south in
the spring and summer. Seems to be a big advantage despite the cooler
temperatures!

I grew them mostly for animal feed, but I grew the Russian
Mammoth/Russian Giant or something like that,(I'll go and look if anyone
is that interested in the specific variety) purchased from Shumway,
IIRC. They are huge. The reason I am chiming in is to mention
something that I found works great. Bee Scent.

I got it from gardens alive (see link) because I saw the pics of the
sunflowers, before and after, in the catalog. I didn't really expect
miracles, but it worked great and I can say that my sunflowers almost
doubled in size during the two years I used the stuff over previous
years growing the same variety in the same basic location, AND, I only
used one treatment instead of the recommended two. (I'm cheap that way
:) ) Of course, it won't lengthen the growing season for you, but it
might increase yields if you find a good variety that suites you.

I have an aluminum model and it doesn't weigh a lot but it is definitely a
super upper body workout from the abs the to arms! Talk about chiseled!

How much does the scythe weigh? Bet it whittles your waist and good--for us
fitness freaks, that is. How do your wrists feel after?

Few things get we Americans more riled up than other people,
especially government agencies, messing with our property rights.
Earlier this year the Supremes ruled in Kelo v. New London that local
government could take private property and transfer it to a business.
As I expected, the fallout from that decision has caused various
people to consider changing their state laws to overrule community rules.

Owning a large acreage is no guarantee against a taking. Indeed,
zoning laws are a form of taking. Environmental protection laws often
designate large areas to be very low density development. In some
cases huge acreages have been held for decades anticipating
development only to have those plans shut down by a new regulation.
What is fair?

This is not a black and white issue. Many essential public
developments including roads would not have happened if government
had not had the right to take private land. It's one of those
questions whose answer depends on whose ox is being gored.

The base issue is private interests versus the interests of the
majority. Perhaps it is simply about power. That is what some of our
forefathers taught the native Americans.

Here's an article that touches on the points:

Western Voters Weigh Shift in Property Rights
