Not too long ago, I inherited a fiberglass fishing rod that was made in
the late 1950's early 1960's. I know it is not worth much from talking
to a guy online about such things, but it has great sentimental value.
He told me to throw the rod away-not an option. The string guides need
to be redone and I know you need something akin to a lathe to hold the
rod to re-string-reattach the guides to the rod. A regular lathe won't
work, I don't think, due to the asymmetry of the rod, and the relative
slow speeds needed to wrap the line compared to wood working speeds.
I've read about people converting sewing machine motors for this use,
but I think that is beyond my ability, and besides, I only have this one
rod to repair. I am thinking of using some type of resin epoxy to glue
on the guides. Do you think this would hold up? Also, what is the
likelihood that the fiberglass itself is weak due to wear and UV damage
after such a long time. The rod was stored in a dark garage. I read
online that it might be possible to sand and varnish the rod. This is a
heavier, baitcasting, 6 foot rod like one would use in river fishing or
for trolling. I will not throw the rod away, and I will not send it off
somewhere to be repaired. No one in my area does these types of repairs
anyway. As Truitt Cathy said (the founder of Chik-fil-A), "If it is to
be, it is up to me". I just need to know whether or not my ideas will
work to make the rod useable. I'd hate to fix it, and then end up
breaking it if I try to use it. I am not opposed to keeping it in the
rod rack on display, but I would like to use it at least once before I
retire it and bequeath it to my son.
I cleaned the reel and put it temporarily on another rod-it works great,
btw. (Penn baitcasting type)
Advice appreciated....

Part of the normal, everyday, included functionality
of a phone line or service (including fax lines)
should be the ability to block calls from specific
phone numbers at the push of a button. We shall name
it the "Never Call Me Again Button". I won't be
holding my breath waiting for this one.

Hi, coming out of lurkdom for a question...

We have friends who make a lot of international phone calls (they're
Palestinian). They would like to get a phone and make free (or nearly free)
calls
using their computer.

Does anyone know how this is done?

Thanks,

Tammy in Colorado

Does your farmers market take food stamps? There is a relatively new
program for families that has coupons/stamps just for farmers market
produce. Locally we are looking at setting up an account with a local bank
so that ours can take them.

You are right there are junk fax laws, but if you have an existing
relation and you are polite in the way that you do things, it's
rarely pursued.
and you call always ask.

The problem with small producers is that will only have certain
products on certain days and seasons. so you have to get that word
out. In my town the cable company has a channel with nothing but
classified ads...but that would be more expensive than a fax.

All these ideas are in the realm of "Guerilla Marketing" some may or
may not work, but are cheap and fast to implement.

I see there are wondrous opportunities for small producers, but these
largely depend on demographics. I would like to see our group come up
with some practices and techniques that would work anywhere with any
product.

Bev,

I have read somewhere that distilled or reverse osmosis water can
actually leach minerals from your body.

Second Skype.

Skype to Skype calls are free. Skype to phone calls are like .02 per
minute, maybe double that internationally.

I actually use Skype for my business phone. $ 39.00 a year for a
local phone number, voicemail, and call forwarding.

All VOIP works best with broadband.

Junk spam faxes are NEVER ok. Senders use the
victim's resources (time, paper and toner) without
permission. This is certainly an effective way to
alienate potential customers. I'd make sure that
someone who did this would get none of my business.

There must be a wide variety of what people call "farmer's markets".
I suppose it could be anything from a 'back o' the truck' gathering to
a flea market style market to a state run facility.
