One time I saw a tomato vine growing high up in some little cranny at San Diego Stadium. There was no soil there, other than the accumulation of dust and crud over the decades, and San Diego is a bone-dry hellhole. It had a few tomatoes on it. It probably obtained most of its calcium from the concrete itself.

My mother declared that no way would tomatoes grow in her cactus garden, but my one little transplant filled the entire area with marvelous cherry tomatoes. Every year after that just the right number of tomato plants reseeded themselves and produced many more than we could eat. This early experience with gardening did wonders to build my unshakable confidence as a gardener.

On the other topic, I don't feel that I have standing in someone else's life to make pronouncements over them. To me, it's like the concept of "standing" in the courtroom. I might sue someone who I know is harming themselves and could potentially cost others money indirectly, but the judge will just say that I have no standing (no personal interest in the situation) and throw it out of court.
