If maximum yield from minimum land is your desire, books that come
to mind are Square-Foot Gardening and How To Raise More Vegetables on Less Land Than You Ever Imagined, or something like that--I think latest additions include Fruits, Nuts, Berries, Grains, and maybe chocolate cake. Look up John Jeavons and Mel Bartholomew on Amazon.
Someone mentioned Dick Raymond and much like him there is Edward Smith's "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible" (published by Storey). Like Raymond, Smith claims to have invented "wide row planting". Both books deal with the concept of planting spaced crops in beds rather than rows. Another noteworthy author is John Seymour who originally wrote a 'back to the land' book very much like Harlan Hubbard's "Payne Hollow" ...Seymour's book was "The Fat of the Land" (1949). Since then he's published a number of books on homesteading but the most apropos to this thread is "Gardening for Self-Sufficiency". A good general treatment of homesteading by him is "The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It". He's still homesteading in Ireland at the age of 90 -something.
