Hi Doreen,
like Jeff says, I find depth/height is critical. I have found over the years-and this is not scientific at all- that they like to have the same orientation, i.e. if a stalk is on the south east side of the clump, make sure it is on the south east side of clump in it's new site.
here's what I do- mark the soil level on the stalks with a marker and actually write the orientation on any stalk that I can figure out what that orientation is.
When I put it into it's new home, I use those marks.
Scientific? nope. Old wife's tale? nope- 'cause I isn't an old wives, yet.
But, it has worked for me
re fall planting- having worked in orchards and nurseries over the years, I have found that the best time to transplant something is when you have the time to do it. Take into account what the plant is doing at the time and you should be able to have it work out.
good fortune to you,
Dan
