We transplant and move 30-40 peony plants ever year but most of our
experience is in moving them later in the season as opposed to earlier.
One thought though for early moves...reduce the foliage just prior to the
move. The result will be less conversion to energy stores for
overwintering but more imporant you'll bring the potential loss of roots more
into balance with the foliage that remains resulting is less
transpiration.
