Hi Doreen,

I've transplanted peonies at many times during the summer and if you do it well, they'll be fine. (I mean quickly, without too much time with the roots exposed to the air and hot sun.) You may sacrifice bloom for the following spring, but more likely they'll never miss a beat.

I need expert advice from all you peony lovers. I know that they should be
planted in the fall, but I have three mature ones that are situated under a
huge elm tree. The former owner of my garden put them there some reason.
Of course, they don't bloom and struggle. I'd like to dug them up now and
transplant them to a new bed full of good soil where they will get light.
Will they be OK or is the fall planting rule hard and fast for a good
reason?
