Hi Andrew:
It's definitely a horse chestnut
(Aesculus hippocastanum), with palmate leaves. He says he got it from his
sister who had 70 ft. trees. I guess the deer seriously browsed it as he says
the trunk is about 8 inches in diameter. Maybe it's older than he
remembers?
I checked out the American
Chestnut Foundation website but it doesn't include the Horse Chestnuts.
