Hi Andrew:
It's definitely a horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum), with palmate leaves. He says he got it from his sister who had 70 ft. trees. I guess the deer seriously browsed it as he says the trunk is about 8 inches in diameter. Maybe it's older than he remembers?
I checked out the American Chestnut Foundation website but it doesn't include the Horse Chestnuts. (Thanks anyway Jeff, it was interesting!)
Cheers
Carol
