Hi Nancy,
What sort of dirt? Similar to the stuff under the refrigerator, or actualy growing dirt?
How about growing something in the spaces like moss or sweet woodruff?
Throw a bit of grass seed down in a small space and see what happens- many of us are fooled about how shady shade is. If the grass pops up you might look at "sunny" ground covers like different thymes. Stay away from the really aggressive stuff.
It'll be interesting to read what you tried and how it worked for you.
Cheers,
Dan
