Personally, I'm learning a lot about etiquette and business through this thread. Your comments, Nan, re chicken way out make a great deal of sense. I like Tom's method, too.

I wonder, though, about the idea that "Most of our readers are smart enough to recognize a good book from a poor
one. " Would that be the case in a teaching style book? (I'm not referring to any particular book, just a generalisation.)
My library can be divided into two main groups- inspirational and educational- with the odd one being found in both sections. If I pick up one from the latter its usually to check out science or methodology. I've found one or two with questionable advice over the years that a.) most folks on this list would have caught and b.) most readers would not have caught.
That's because most of us are in the business of gardening first and writing second; well, that's where our hearts lie. We should have the specialised education and/or knowledge that puts us ahead of our readers.
