My two cents on this aspect of books and reviews....In the past I have done a few less than positive book reviews...but I haven't done that for years. Now, if I don't really like a book, I don't review it. As one who writes books, and makes a living doing that, I know how the authors feel when a review is so-so, or mostly good but not enthusiastic. I feel, and that's just me, that I should try and support my fellow writers as much as possible...and hope that they'd feel the same about me.
I noticed long ago, that with fiction in particular, and more specifically with the most popular fiction...that these writers all have a tight group of fellow writers who always step up and write glowing reviews for each other...and I admire them for backing each other up like that; obviously it pays great dividends.
By the way, almost any time I read any kind of book, no matter what the subject, if I like it, I almost immediately go to www.amazon.com and put in a glowing review. I then normally copy the review I just wrote, and go and post it at www.BN.com too. It kills me when I see a terrific book that isn't selling well.

Well, Dan
I am not entirely sure how that word is going to get around about the contents of the book. I was sent a book for review by a Timber Press by a national magazine. My review was not bad, but I did find fault with one aspect. They did not run the review for it was considered negative. I think I received a hint to change the review... like are you sure??, but that could have been my imagination. I did find out that they do not publish negative reviews on gardening books. If it is a stinker they do not say anything.
Incidentally, I have not received another request to do a book review.
Such is the world we live in....

However, this brings up another question. Timber Press is a publisher with the bottom line of profits. Should they be held accountable to the content of a book? Shouldn't they be asking, "How many of these books can we sell?" and let the public determine its merits?
