Lorraine,

I use a triple-labeling system.

First, I map the locations of plants in my garden, using old fashioned graph paper in an extra-large size and a pencil (so I can easily  erase plants that don't make it).

Second, I use the metal 1 x 3 inch metal labels (the mouse graveyard type!) which I write on with a Sharpee (both front and back, away from the sun) and anchor to the ground using the standard metal U-shaped stakes which come with them.

And third, when I plant every plant (bulb, corm, tuber, root -- it makes no difference) I also bury a label in the ground with it. For this purpose, I cut up a gallon milk jug and write the plant's name on it with a Sharpee. If I lose the metal tag, I still have the plastic label below ground, where the ink doesn't fade, since sun doesn't hit it. It's a great back-up system, especiallly for plants that have to be separated or divided periodically.
