As for triclopyr, the persistence in soil, as reported at http://infoventures.com/e-hlth/pestcide/triclopy.html, is as follows:
If you go to this site, you'll see that the product is sold under the name Grazon, among others. Grazon has a long history of persisting in the environment, including the soil. Hay harvested from Grazon-sprayed fields kills plants mulched with it, and animals fed the hay retain the herbicide in their gut and pass it through in their manure. Even when it (the manure) is composted, Grazon is present.
The USDA information site (referenced above) is almost verbatim from the Grazon packaging. The USDA and other government agencies have a long history of using herbicides to clear lands and then paying off lawsuits from those landowners downwind or peripheral to the application who suffer damage.
Idaho's potato farmers sued the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) when they applied a Grazon relative to clean off fire breaks. Potato crops failed for several years, and the land cannot be cleared of the herbicide. U.S. Senator Larry Craig submitted an amendment to the 2002 Agricultural Appropriations bill to provide $49 million in financial compensation to the affected farmers. It was stripped by Congress before passage. More than 100 Idaho farmers and ranchers sued DuPont, several herbicide applicators and the BLM in April 2002 for loss of profits, land value, production, rent income and reputation. Damages could be in the hundreds of million dollars range, according to Boise, Idaho attorney Walter Bithell, who represents the farmers.
My point--and I do have one--is to think twice and even three times before casually applying an herbicide, especially a powerful one.
