Hmmm. Although I don't generally advocate herbicide use in home gardens, I
believe some of this previous post is either mistated and/or can easily be
misunderstood, the latter because it's unclear just what the prononun "it"
refers to.

Clopyralid and triclopyr are in the pyridine family of herbicides.

As far as I am aware, clopyralid is the one that's been troublesome in
compost. Even so, the label did include a cautionary statement for use of
treated materials in compost.

As for triclopyr, the persistence in soil, as reported at
http://infoventures.com/e-hlth/pestcide/triclopy.html, is as follows:

" * Residual Soil Activity: Triclopyr is active in the soil, and is
absorbed by plant roots.
* Adsorption: Triclopyr is adsorbed by clay particles and organic matter
particles in soil.
* Persistence and Agents of Degradation: Microorganisms degrade triclopyr
rapidly; the average half-life in soil is 46 days. Triclopyr degrades more
rapidly under warm, moist conditions.
* Metabolites/Degradation Products and Potential Environmental
Effects:3,5,6-Trichloro-2-pyridinol is the major initial product of
degradation. It has a half-life of 30 to 90 days, and degrades to carbon
dioxide and organic matter."
