That's what I do. I use a keyhole saw that I found in the garage when we moved in here. Dig a hole like a post hole at the edge of the grass clump (well, you already have a trench) and saw off hunks of the clump. After I've sawed a few inches into the clump, I stick a spading fork into the cut to hold it apart so the saw doesn't bind.  I also use this technique on very large hostas. (I have one unnamed variety that grows over four feet with flower stems over six.)
