Title: Re: [gwl-g] moving miscanthus
Nan,

Dividing grasses is a topic my daylily group is discussing right now. Several people have written that they use a chainsaw to divide grass. They tie rope or duct tape around the foliage, remove the foliage at ground level and then cut the base into pieces, all with a chainsaw.

Other's have written their horror stories about chainsaws (a tool you won't catch me using in my garden). They recommend a sawsall (reciprocating saw) to cut the clump and then lift out different pieces.

I'm not laughing, really :-)   Been there and done that, once I tried to divide a Rudbeckia "Herbstsonne" and as my entire body was balanced along the handle of the pitchfork I kept saying "there's got to be a better way". That's when I got out an ax and cut the clump into pieces before trying to lift them out of the ground.

Good luck! And, let us know how you finally got it out of the ground.

Melanie Vassallo
