That's one of the problems with most needled evergreen trees; with
maturity they lose their bottom branches; tend to shade themselves
out. I've watched 'screening' plantings of white pine here over the
years; planted originally when a new house went up to screen it from
the road. Now, the trees are mature and have no branches for about
10' off the ground, so there's a perfect view of the house that they
were meant to screen...

Fran and all,
Wooley Adelgid is rampent here on Long Island. I have 22 hemlocks
planted in a row, 6' between each one. They are about 40' tall and
have no branches on the bottom 1/2. It's the stupidest looking thing
you ever saw.
That is until you look at the other side of the property line and see
460' of spruce trees planted single file, almost 100 of them, all
bare on the bottom 2/3's. Mother nature removes a few for us every
year, I think I should have married a lumberjack!
The eastern red cedars though are magnificent. Loaded with birds
nests at this time of year. In late winter they almost bow down as
huge flocks of birds eat the little blue berries.
