I don't know if Long Island has been hit by Wooley Adelgid, but from
CT
and up at least through Boston, we are losing all our hemlocks. I'd
think
three times before planting tsuga canadensis.

Good point, Fran. We're getting hit with those stinkin' critters
around here, too, but I find I can control them in my hemlock hedge
with horticultural oil applications; not possible for a mature tree
as you'd need a cherry picker to get to them. Pity as it's such a
lovely tree and well adapted to light to medium shade, which most
needled evergreens are not.
