Melanie,
Pagoda and grey dogwoods (Cornus alternifolia and C. racemosa) and
serviceberries (Amelanchier) are the most popular plants with the birds in
my garden. The grey dogwood does sucker but the others are very well
behaved. I have a green cutleaf elder which doesn't seem to sucker quite as
vigorously as some of its relations.
Blue jays nest in our spruce and yew; the mourning doves prefer the Austrian
pine; the cardinals go for the umbrella pine (though one year they nested in
the clematis right beside my kitchen window - what a treat) and the robins
and wrens fight it out for a spot in the climbing hydrangea.
